Coming from an island where peaks and mountains are numerous and part of the daily life of each inhabitant as long as you are a bit of a hiker, I was eager to see what Portugal has to offer.
Serra Da Estrela, the highest point in mainland Portugal
There was no hesitation on where to go first, as I heard so much about Serra Da Estrela, the highest point in mainland Portugal. After a couple of searches on the route and the main points of interest, we went for it on a hot sunny day.
The road to Serra Da Estrela is beautiful. Coming from the North you can admire the beauty of the mountain all along.
The first encounter with water dams was at “Albufeira da Barragem do Covão do Curral” and “Barragem Marques da Silva”, followed by the “Barragem Marques Da Silva” and the Lagoa Comprida.
This is where beautiful hikes begins. From there you can follow a not-so-well indicated path to see several places like the famous Covão dos Conchos. We didn’t try it this time but we’ll come back for it next Spring for sure!
This time we went around to have several viewpoints and were surprised bu the peacefulness of the place and its lunar landscapes!
Then we headed to the summit where the ski station is during winter. So impressive !
Going back down the mountain it’s almost impossible not to stop to capture all the beauty around! Viewpoints, water dams, cliffs…wow!
